The high-IQ sort either try to weaken tribal mechanics or turn that force towards other uses. I’m not sure if they don’t like tribalism, or just don’t like the sort of people who like tribalism. Because of this, they miss out on the benefits that tribal behavior can bring.
The yeoman-sort like tribal behavior, but (at least lately) they haven’t paid attention to its costs and its risks.
The big problem is in the risks of tribalism. I think the “expected” benefits or costs change over time, and tend to cycle. You’re too open -> trouble comes in -> you close up -> you get too insular and stagnate -> you open back up etc. The growth of technology and weapons, though, means the risks of tribalism just keep ratcheting up – and that means your anti-tribal types keep feeling the need to push against it, even if they’d benefit from raising the walls a little higher.
