CH: It is worth your highlighting what is occurring in the UK at the moment. It is truly chilling and shows how ephemeral recent political gains may be.
In short:
Pre-Brexit: the UK had a ~12% say in EU policy making (across the board, other than relating to the currency), and the unilateral ability to withdraw totally with two years notice.
Brexit Vote: the largest ever vote in the UK voted to Leave. The electorate was unambiguously warned that voting to leave would tank the economy because it would mean leaving the EU entirely, including the Customs Union (i.e. common tariff zone) and Single Market (i.e. precursor for Federal superstate). They still voted to leave because they wanted sovereignty.
Today: the UK government (led by a Prime Minister who wanted to remain in the EU and who is maneuvering in secret with the civil service), is attempting to force through an ‘agreement’ that leaves the UK subject to EU policy making INDEFINITELY with ZERO say and with ZERO unilateral ability to withdraw at all for any reason whatsoever. She does this proclaiming that she has to protect “jobs” and that Brexit is “not about political theory” and that she is delivering on what people voted for.
The ability of establishments to subvert even the most transparent votes is real. Beware.
