If you say the word ‘beauty’ around modern artists, they get very angry, very quickly because they think the need for beauty is some sort of human weakness and they want to separate themselves from that. to some extent, idiotic conservatives are weak, but that wasn’t what motivated people to create beautiful art in the first place. So artists make ugly things because right now the purpose is to deliberately disavow what was done in the past and take a stab at the hoi polloi that desire beauty. It’s their way of separating the wheat from the chaff. The more disgusted or disturbed or confused or let-down that people are, the more successful the art.
