Saying “be yourself” could actually be an encouragement to learn game, no? I think the problem is that many people are just crap and being themselves is the worst advice.

A quick hypothetical to illustrate male cooperation as a necessary function for increased sexual/reproductive success for the majority of men.
Imagine you have a tribe of 5 males and 5 females. The males are preselected for a heirarchy amongst the women in terms of sexual desirability (number one Alpha through to number 5 Alpha). The women are also similarily preselected based upon boob size, hip to waist ratio, etc and other indicators of youth and fertility.
In simplified terms, the women will all desire to mate with Alpha 1 and the men all want to sleep with all 5 women, (in descending order of 1-5), to the exclusion of the other men. Clearly serious competition that would escalate to violence, maiming, and death rather quickly. By exerting their prefrontal cortex, however, the men can quickly conclude it to be a very bad scenario as the low percentage of success is very undesirable as opposed to the guarantee of partial success with a compromise.
In other words, the men numbers 2-5 quickly surmise that in a knock down drag out fight Alpha 1 is going to win all ths spoils therefore it behooves them to cooperate against him.

Hence Alpha 1 quickly realizes its not in his interest to go for the full harem and must also cooperate.
Thus the men decide to shake hand and each take a portion of the pie with Alpha Male 1 getting the juiciest piece for himself and on down. They then keep a close eye on each other for stealth attempts at violence, penetration/insemination and cuckoldry. In other words all the skirmishes and battles we see on the periphery of pair bonding.
Of course this hypothetical tribe of ten doesn’t describe the real male heirarchy where kings, aristrocrates, head chiefs, etc exist, but just a simplified idea of male cooperation leading to the best chances for the bell curve AFC to “get some”.
Meanwhile the women, while 4 out of the 5 do not get seed from the best “tingles”, at least get something as well. But their compromise is less to their liking than the men’s. Good thing us men got to enforce social norms by virtue of our physical superiority for a good long while. We can take comfort in knowing that the majority our ancestral brotherhood was “at least gettin’ some”.
MOST interestingly though, is that most women would probably prefer the men duke it out and that all 5 get action from Alpha 1 in the end and that most men are probably fairly satisfied with a “a least I am getting some” scenario.
(This is where there is the overlap between the female super-norm and the uber-alpha male super-norm. )
To soldify this partial success paradigm we ended up with the creation of an overarching moral imperative solidifying “hard” monogamy –

So, for the “just be yourself” crowd, I would ask; is the being currently known as yourself, the best version of you that you might be?
No one pops out of the womb fully formed as a person, with all your traits and skills and experience.
You’ve got to earn those. You have got to work improve yourself, making “yourself” a better model.
So, in that sense, yes, “being yourself” will work, if you choose to work to better yourself to where the “real” you can speak for itself.
I have been working to improve myself in different areas, realizing it is for me, to benefit me, but also realizing that it will affect how others view me.
Learning Game, in all its different aspects, is one way you can do that.
Is it the only way?
Maybe not, but I think learning even the basics of it will teach a guy what he is up against, will dispel self-defeating delusions tripping him, and set him on a path toward a path becoming the kind of guy women desire, rather than tolerate.

The big problem is that many PUA’s just become the jerks and buttheads. There is a big difference between going for what you want, and not letting other people walk all over you, and being the guy who walks all over other people (the alpha). I define “smart” as intelligence quotient. You know, the people we groom into scientists, astronauts, professors, doctors, lawyers …. those people.

Not sure how this changes anything. I presume at some point on the continuum you reach a discontinuity where a person is either a lesser alpha or a greater beta, and the binary is asserted. I think it is always important to be honest with yourself. I think most men have a part of them that can be developed to being appealing to women. There’s a lot of ways in which I’m ‘naturally’ a beta provider type. Some of those things are really . That probably means I’m never going to be as successful as our good blog owner here. Which is fine, i’m not looking to. I don’t see alpha/beta/omega as really a binary thing, I see it more of as a continuum, where you can have less or more of the desirable traits. I’m looking to develope *just enough* game/alpha-ness that I can snag a good looking girl of my desired ethnicity, age range, compatible personality, etc. and develope a long-term relationship (hopefully marriage, down the road).
With that in mind, I’m trying to sort out what aspects of me are essential to making me happy (and yea, being a caring guy, good provider, etc. is important) and figuring out what’s not essential, and what I can change- and that mostly boils down to developing confidence, overcoming anxieties, getting less emotionally invested in girls / clingy, etc.. I’m also trying to develop other sides of me that I think might help (get more professional success, build up more muscle). I’m close enough to being able to date successfully now, that I think with some marginal improvement I could actually be successful.
Some aspects of our nature are essential, others are accidental. And I agree that ‘be yourself’ is shit advice, whether it be for dating, for a job, etc. The whole purpose of self improvement (physically, intellectually, professionally, socially, personally) is changing our nature and choosing to *not* ‘be ourselves’.

Actually, I think “be yourself” is exactly the correct premise. Look, if there’s any science to this at all, then it means that you are stuck with what you are. You can never “become” an alpha, ever. This is innate biology. But what’s happened is that feminism has encouraged all men to slide a notch down the sexual hierarchy so that Alpha’s mimic greater betas, greater betas mimic lesser betas etc.
