Germany got through ww1 in okay shape.
France was devastated demographically. The Scots were hard hit along with the Protestant Irish.
The English were shook up by it but not quite devastated. The formation of Australian, South African, Kiwi and Canadian national identities were moved forward.

Great wars do cull the best men. It is not a question of ‘if’ but rather by how much. The military screens out mentally and physically unfit men then puts the fit men who pass into high mortality situations.
Mechanized warfare does not kill indiscriminately. A machine gun or tank kills what it is aimed at which is predominately enemy combatants who generally have all been screened for good health, at least average intelligence, etc.

Part of this is bodyfat. That classically handsome look really only works between BMI 23-27 ish. Like Cantman, my grandads were under age until the final whistle (they did try before, the idiots) and so missed the fun their many older bros had, coming back to wheel around in a “Bath chair” because no legs, or barking mad (shrapnel) or taking a permanent vacation under Belgium/France (majority).

Atheism was meant broadly. How many people are nominal Christians at best? I dare say the majority in the US are agnostic. Atheism also fills our schools and is the foundation of our current Luciferian based philosophical ideals. The single biggest religious preference in the military is no preference. Canvass the young today. How many have any religion at all? That article discusses the construction of a cathedral for the armed forces in Russia. Russia has made Orthodox Catholicism prominent in its armed forces and young men are called to God who never had much instruction in their lives at home. They have priests bless their rifles. Wishy washy Christians are part of that 15% or 20% who still go to church. Only about 5% of Catholics attend Church in Germany regularly and in the US it is 15%. Protestants are somewhere in between I believe and many are the kind who accept abortion, homosexuality, feminism etc. I think Godlessness is far more widespread than you are implying. it is casual in nature and reinforced everywhere in the popular media as well as in academia in the form of deliberate secularism.

Also, infectious diseases like smallpox, diphtheria and tuberculosis took a steady toll on the vulnerable, who often were vulnerable because of congenital conditions like diabetes, cystic fibrosis, et cetera.
