Executive Summary: what liberals have in IQ they lack in common sense. It’s an evolutionary trade-off.
In short, it has often been observed that high IQ types are lacking in ‘common sense’ – and especially when it comes to dealing with other human beings. General intelligence is not just a cognitive ability; it is also a cognitive disposition. So, the greater cognitive abilities of higher IQ tend also to be accompanied by a distinctive high IQ personality type including the trait of ‘Openness to experience’, ‘enlightened’ or progressive left-wing political values, and atheism. Drawing on the ideas of Kanazawa, my suggested explanation for this association between intelligence and personality is that an increasing relative level of IQ brings with it a tendency differentially to over-use general intelligence in problem-solving, and to over-ride those instinctive and spontaneous forms of evolved behaviour which could be termed common sense. Preferential use of abstract analysis is often useful when dealing with the many evolutionary novelties to be found in modernizing societies; but is not usually useful for dealing with social and psychological problems for which humans have evolved ‘domain-specific’ adaptive behaviours. And since evolved common sense usually produces the right answers in the social domain; this implies that, when it comes to solving social problems, the most intelligent people are more likely than those of average intelligence to have novel but silly ideas, and therefore to believe and behave maladaptively. I further suggest that this random silliness of the most intelligent people may be amplified to generate systematic wrongness when intellectuals are in addition ‘advertising’ their own high intelligence in the evolutionarily novel context of a modern IQ meritocracy. The cognitively-stratified context of communicating almost-exclusively with others of similar intelligence, generates opinions and behaviours among the highest IQ people which are not just lacking in common sense but perversely wrong. Hence the phenomenon of ‘political correctness’ (PC); whereby false and foolish ideas have come to dominate, and moralistically be enforced upon, the ruling elites of whole nations.
That description sounds precisely like the basis for the cognitive and social schisms currently tearing apart Western nations. Self-segregating and supercharged-signaling “clever sillies” are running their homelands into the ground with overbearing government interventions to “close the gap” and open borders to “create more gaps”. This stupidity of intelligence signaling would be funny if it weren’t also so damned threatening to the continued survival of the West.
The over-use of abstract reasoning may be most obvious in the social domain, where normal humans are richly equipped with evolved psychological mechanisms both for here-and-now interactions (e.g. rapidly reading emotions from facial expression, gesture and posture, and speech intonation) and for ‘strategic’ modelling of social interactions to understand predict and manipulate the behaviour of others. Social strategies deploy inferred knowledge about the dispositions, motivations and intentions of others. When the most intelligent people over-ride the social intelligence systems and apply generic, abstract and systematic reasoning of the kind which is enhanced among higher IQ people, they are ignoring an ‘expert system’ in favour of a non-expert system.
For an immediately palpable example of SMRT shitlibs applying abstract and systematic reasoning to a social intelligence system, see their snarky “you’re more likely to be killed by falling furniture than by a Muslim terrorist” apples-to-oranges comparison. (Socially intelligent reply: “Sure but falling furniture isn’t getting on planes with me, patting me down after a two hour wait in the TSA line, or calling for death to all infidels.”)
Charlton goes on to explain why it seems like we are seeing more pajamaboy shitlib faces and cuckfaces in the West:
Indeed, I suggest that higher levels of the personality trait of Openness in higher IQ people may be the flip-side of this over-use of abstraction. I regard Openness as the result of deploying abstract analysis for social problems to yield unstable and unpredictable results, when innate social intelligence would tend to yield predictable and stable results. This might plausibly underlie the tendency of the most intelligent people in modernizing societies to hold ‘left-wing’ political views.
I would argue that neophilia (or novelty-seeking) is a driving attribute of the personality trait of Openness; and a disposition common in adolescents and immature adults who display what I have termed ‘psychological neoteny’.
Psychological neoteny is likely correlated, by the associative property, with physical and facial neoteny. Physiognomy is real, and it’s no accident that we often observe the silliest of shitlibs have very punchable faces devoid of any masculinity.
Shitlibs are, in essence, arrested adolescents, forever on the hunt for the next thrill to add meaning to their disconnected lives. Risk-taking and novelty-seeking are useful traits to have when one must impress a mate (usually a man impressing a girl) or broaden the pool of acceptable mates; but those traits are destructive when scaled up to the level of social policy and beyond the bounds of the life stage when mate acquisition is paramount.
In such an evolutionarily-unprecedented, artificial ‘hothouse’ environment, it is plausible that any IQ-related behaviours are amplified: partly because there is little counter-pressure from the less intelligent people with less neophiliac personalities, and perhaps mainly because there is a great deal of IQ-advertisement. Indeed, it looks very much as if the elites of modern societies are characterized by considerable IQ-signalling. Sometimes this is direct advertisement (e.g. when boasting about intellectual attainments or attendance at highly-selective colleges) and more often the signalling is subtly-indirect when people display the attitudes, beliefs, fashions, manners and hobbies associated with high intelligence. This advertising is probably based on sexual selection, if IQ has been a measure of general fitness during human evolutionary history, and was associated with a wide range of adaptive traits.
But we are now at the point when the libshit SMRT mate signaling has reached sexual market saturation; I predict, and in fact we can see it happening already, that deftly counter-signaling the leftoid equalism orthodoxy will be a powerful display of fitness, for what do women love more than a bad boy rule-breaker who can buck the system and not just survive, but thrive? As always, BALLS wins babes.
My hunch is that it is this kind of IQ-advertisement which has led to the most intelligent people in modern societies having ideas about social phenomena that are not just randomly incorrect (due to inappropriately misapplying abstract analysis) but are systematically wrong. I am talking of the phenomenon known as political correctness (PC) in which foolish and false ideas have become moralistically-enforced among the ruling intellectual elite. And these ideas have invaded academic, political and social discourse. Because while the stereotypical nutty professor in the hard sciences is a brilliant scientist but silly about everything else; the stereotypical nutty professor social scientist or humanities professor is not just silly about ‘everything else’, but also silly in their professional work.
I was convinced before reading this Charlton hypothesis that what’s happening in the AngloGermanoSphere is runaway “intelligence signaling”; that is, aesthetically disfigured and socially untethered White shitlibs of the West can only pride themselves on their abstraction smarts, and to stay ahead of their peers they have to signal hard against common sense, leading to xenophilia spirals (as well as degeneracy spirals and anti-White spirals).
(As a reader wrote, “Believing in a lie can require more intelligence; you have to know the truth to conceal it properly, plus the pleasing lie, plus the explanation why the lie is more true than the truth.”)
What’s happened is that common sense (or gut instinct, or mental sanity) has become associated with declassé opinions and flyover rubes. The cause of this association is complex, but it’s where we are today and it means that the shitlib clown-cognition signaling will continue until a cataclysm forces common sense on them. I doubt that increasingly insulated, credentialist suck-up shitlibs will rediscover the merits of common sense on their own.
Addendum: the Maul-Right is the next stage of human evolution: high IQ AND common sense. And that fact, more than any other, explains the hysterical response of the Left to dissident crimethinkers and to Trump; the Left knows a real threat to their rule when they see one.

Check out Prof. Garret Jones’ book The Hive Mind. IQ of your group or nation has more effect on your quality of life than even your own individual IQ.
Also, hiring for IQ is just as effective as interviewing candidates.
Again, none of this negates the point of the post, which is that good governance also requires common sense, and high IQ people making policy may have to resist the urge to reinvent the wheel when it comes to the common sense that has governed human interactions for Millenia.

my point seems to have gone over your head.
your premise is that higher IQ leads to better quality decisions. in regards to policy, that means better quality decisions for the good of the collective. but what if you have certain high-IQ policy-making individuals who have varying degrees of empathy for the ‘collective’? varying levels of courage to make difficult choices? varying levels of time preference (short term vs. long term)? etc.
hence my question: does it make sense to measure IQ separately from these other qualities, or should they be measured together? (these other qualities can be measured using ‘the science’, too.)
just because IQ is an accurate measure for success in many areas doesn’t mean it’s as good a predictor as it COULD be. perhaps the methods for measuring intelligence are due for some refining.

For example, urban West Germans had an iq of 110 in an older study despite the presence of Turks, albeit lower than now. You’re basically comparing apples to oranges when you compare Ashkenazi Americans to an entire ethnicity because the former aren’t even representative for Ashkenazis in general, let alone Jews in general.

Curt Doolittle explains it. The higher IQ groups of humans (whites, NE asians) also self-selected genetically for millenia in a way that reduced the extent to which our bodies develop physically. Blacks have lower IQ and higher test and physical development on avg. Their warm weather environment cause them not to develop mentally and physically the way whites and North East Asians did in cold weather.

I think there is some grain of truth in the notion that intelligent people bring novel ideas to old problems, and these ideas, being untested, often have unintended consequences. Sometimes tragically so.
The main problem is different though. The regressive movements of feminists, SJWs and multiculturalists began many years ago as responses to genuine grievances. Energetic and intelligent people championed those causes and sooner or later achieved all the worthwhile goals. At that point, intelligent people started bowing out, moving on to more productive ventures, while the energetic but stupid stayed in place. Consequently these movements went off course, turning more and more ridiculous by the day.

Gone are the elder professors of just a decade ago, many of whom came from a different America, and maybe even (quelle horreur) blue collar backgrounds, and were thus grounded in cognitive and cultural normalcy. I had a great professor who landed on Omaha Beach. The likes of him are not to be found these days.

The way I see it, the history books are the experimental record of the various social systems and ideas.
Any intelligent person should be able to read the historical record and draw rational conclusions from it.
Namely that centralised economic planning, concentration of power, identity politics, and forcing incompatible races to squabble inside one nation state, is a recipe for penury and an awful lot of violence (the evidence is not even subtle, e.g. Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, Chavez, Mugabe, or just pick the history of any African nation in the last 50 years).

CH, à huge issue is the glaring immorality in retirement benefits where you handicap your children by having siblings for them. While Chad has three kids and his estate gets divided among them, Dud has one child who will inherit an entire estate while taking Chad’s children too. Unless we abolish retirement benefits, we need to introduce estate taxes of 100% for the childless and decrease them by 33% for each extra child. It’s farcical that society goes along with this scheme of providing decade long vacations for old farts, subsidised by the children of the people who did the right thing. Instead of the families who have multiple children being better off, we reated a society where having a single child is the jackpot. Having smart children and investing in them would make you better off if you got the benefit of their care in old age, instead of that benefit being stolen by strivers, catladies etc, which leaves you only holding the bag for the cost.
Fuck this old, worthless scum who think they deserve shit from anyone else after ruining their own societies and not sacrificing anything to retire.

tl/dr: Evolution is about trade-offs. After billions of years of competition, it’s a lot harder to get a minor edge than lay people would guess. Seemingly low cost items like hard teeth, deadly poisons, etc are actually high cost.
Evolution won’t give you everything you might want. High T muscular men benefit in some niches; low T brainy men in others, with little overlap. Sure you can trace some of this stuff out at the biochemical level looking at specific hormone receptors in brain and muscle, or at the historical evolutionary level (eg the switch to farming favored female-type mental characteristics) but it all boils down to Rolling Stone Darwinism:

I looked at the original article to see where the data was drawn from, what populations, what controls, what statistical method. Unless this information is in the references, this article seems to rely on anecdote, not the scientific method. If liberal vs. conservative were not drawn from the same populations, the experiment is invalid. If assumptions preceded the data collection and what was considered a higher IQ population was drawn from specific subsets, I’m not seeing that much can be made of this article. I think it would probably be more accurate to substitute higher education for higher IQ in this article. But, like I said, i’d have to see the original study.

The professional shitlibs that populate sociology / black studies / gender studies departments are most likely of average IQ and perhaps higher than average verbal IQ — which is required for being able to memorize buzzwords and spout them off convincingly. Intelligence always comes with the ability to create or destroy. If you can bring down a whole civilization or a country like Imperial Russia as happened in 1917 for sure you have an IQ>100. I tend to say it is on the same level like making a David, painting a Mona Lisa or composing a Brandenburg Concerto. The grade is genius on the destruction scale.
I honestly think that Cultural Marxism in general and the deconstruction of the Humboldtian education ideal in particular have made the average people dumb and dumber and thus very vulnerable to propaganda. Smart people are valuable, but need to be managed carefully.
The occasional men who comes along who are pragmatic, possessed if common sense, and geniuses are exceedinly rare. They’re the Teddy Roosevelts and the Napoleans.
I also wonder how much isolation from nature and hands on work plays a part in the mental derangement of high IQ types.

This hits a bit home for me, since I have a very high IQ and, outside of my family, have over the years been surrounded by shitlibs — usually atheist, liberal Democrat, and consider Trump as some kind of moron or nut, y’know, the works. I’m at a loss to know where the heck all the people who support Trump work and hang out.
Similarly, as far as common interests go, it would appear that the only people who are interested in the same things I am are shitlibs. It forces me to be a loner, at least when it comes to male friends IRL (online, I’m of course in with the alt-right), since I know that I cannot trust shitlibs. In fact, I’ve been backstabbed repeatedly by gamma shitlib males who at first assume I’m one of them then always pull some nasty exclusionary trick. Frankly, it annoys the shit out of me.
In my own case, I’ve been trying my darndest to do the opposite of intelligence signaling, IOW, try to imitate someone of average intelligence. Of course, I’m too “weird” to pull it off convincingly, but I’m making progress. But my main question would be: where the eff are the shitlords IRL?

interesting point. what does one do when IRL people are less capable of intelligent conversation than the average dog? this is a real problem. educating people takes time. a good start is to seek out high IQ individuals to start with. sometimes you can break down their worldview and make them smarter. a nice pair of tits somehow seems to provide a short term cure for the isolation.
truth is, brains are like plants. they grow when they have the right nutrients and environment. we’d all be a lot smarter if we were surrounded by more smart people. unfortunately we don’t have a culture that fosters high intelligence. intelligence is scary, especially to those that don’t have it.
one day we might have to do meetups. finding as many smart people IRL as exist on this one comments board would take lifetimes. it’s not the time yet. maybe after the left has been fully neutered and cauterized.

The effects of the communist selection would be hilarious if not sad. This rendered almost everyone in Eastern Europe without a history of oppression to be only slightly above sand niggers in intellectual ability. I just watched a TV show where an interviewer was asking peasants what’s the difference between one’s name and surname and most couldn’t say despite the fact it’s written on their fucking identification cards. Explanations like ‘I just never thought about it’ for such a thing leave you with your mouth agape. It’s ironic those 1989 fools overthrew communism for democracy given democracy in the post-communism context means being ruled by a majority of outright moronic people.

I agree, but they also need to shut the fuck up about class warfare. It’s contemptible regardless of who is doing it, the smart or the stupid. If they can’t accept their place, there won’t be any shared destiny and they’ll end up being screwed over because the powerful and the smart will always come up on top.
Even under communism you had a bunch of powerful people shitting on everyone so badly that most of those who worked for the evil capitalists in industry regretted the demise of the pre-communist world.

While I do partially agree with this when it comes to shitlibs, the majority of leftist morons aren’t exactly shitlibs, but regular, semi-intelligent people who are badly educated and manipulated. I don’t think this applies to them and it requires extensive training and conditioning for many to behave in shitlib ways. It’s patently obvious in the cases of those from countries that are more socially conservative, but who study abroad and get pozzed, or the semi-shitlord high-school graduates who end up as liberals upon finishing their university education.
It’s also quite obvious that atheism isn’t related to shitlibbism too, except contextually, given that historically atheists had no issue with shitlord beliefs. Ideas should be analysed memetically too – atheism and shitlib idiocy simply propagate together now, but it wasn’t always the case. Since it’s easy to believe self-serving lies that puts you in a favorable light, I’m not even surprised the semi-intelligent signal how smart they are about having opinions on things they don’t understand by adopting the beliefs currently associated with what’s perceived as smart at the moment.
I think this is a plausible explanation for shitlib activists, but not a probable one for your garden variety liberal.

Those white men who have internalised the libtard/leftit Establishment point of view have neither the intelligence nor the imagination nor the curiosity to seek out alternative points of view, – and these alternatives are easily accessible on the Internet, obviously. They also don’t have the intelligence to recognise when their own beliefs are mutually inconsistent, or when they are themselves not living by these beliefs. Here are a couple of concrete examples. Some random guy on facebook said that murderers should not face the death penalty since there was always the danger of an innocent man being executed. I pointed out that in 2014 there were FOUR cases of a released murdered having killed again. He did not know of this. Why not? Because he was thick. Another supports Labour and multiculturalism yet has moved to an all white town because he prefers the ambience of a white middle class neighbourhood, as he admits, yet he can’t see the connection between “niceness”and “being white”. He also is thick.
For women its different, one doesn’t expect a woman to be logical or rational. But the lack of these characteristics is pathetic in a man.
Its all to do with IQ.
