As an old guy, I can say that almost every decision I made, regarding important life choices, which were comfortable and low risk, I came to regret. Those decisions I made which were stressful, and which I made under duress (choosing between several stressful alternatives) I found yielded the greatest rewards.
I can see two forces at work here. Perhaps, because we imbue stressful decisions with greater importance, we come to value the consequences from such decisions, regardless of benefit, as more rewarding. Or, this is an example of hormesis: a version of “that which does not kill us makes us stronger”. Decisions made under stress strengthen our resolve to see them through, and the more we have invested in a decision, the greater the likelihood we will value the fruits of our labor, even if those fruits aren’t very good for us.

No doubt a giant global financial crisis is coming, but I feel that in the aftermath, the dollar will not take such a big hit relative to other stores of value. I mean, gold — which has no real intrinsic value beyond its utility in specialty electronics/scientific equipment — has itself become a fiat currency as evidenced by the existance of outstanding futures contracts for something like 10x the amount of gold that has been mined in the history of mankind. Right now society’s beta men are like the sheepdogs who try and herd anything that looks like sheep. They are just wired to keep providing, like the sheep dog is wired to herd. As this function is not permitted, they experience great stress, and will try various ways to provide/herd something–anything–to fill that wired up need.

As an old guy, I can say that almost every decision I made, regarding important life choices, which were comfortable and low risk, I came to regret.

I disagree with this quote, because it was obviously written by someone who made low-risk choices. I’d like to ask someone who always made high-risk choices evaluate his or her life satisfaction in regards to those choices. I’d bet that almost all high-risk takers regret most of the choices they made.
Imagine that you are faced with a choice that has a 2% chance of making a million dollars, or you could just take a sure payout of $10,000. Statistics would suggest that you should take the high-risk path, because, on average, you will have a higher expected value of success ($20,000).
The thing is, there is no “average” person who makes $20,000 in this case. You only have people who take the $10,000 (and later express regret because they think they didn’t make much money), one or two people who strike it rich, and a whole lot of people who lost their houses because they needed the $10,000 to pay the bills.
You only have one life, and you don’t get to try again after you die. It’s easy for people whose lives turned out pretty well, but not exceptionally, that they should have “taken risks,” because they don’t realize the consequences of taking them and losing. If you ask the people who took those risks, you’re likely going to find that most of them say the exact opposite – they regret not making the “smart” choice and taking the stable option. People always think that the other person’s life is better than the things they have.
