I was just explaining this to my mother, who doesn’t believe it. Back in the day, I applied — and was admitted to — one Ivy league school (I didn’t end up going). I explained to her that there is no way in hell I would be admitted today. I mean, yeah, I’m a smart guy, but no I’m not on the level of a Newton or Pascal. Few are. And that’s nearly what it would take for a white man.
She wouldn’t hear it. Part is pride in offspring, but also part is the inability of many older folks to admit that this isn’t the country they grew up in.
These institutions don’t belong to us.
It’s better to recognize this than to continue to play-act and grant them legitimacy.
