Per CH’s comment about the timing and being in the 1950s. If you look at the world at the end of WW2 most of the industrial world was destroyed except for the United States. We had a huge economic advantage and we also educated every returning GI in how to run a business. We saw the largest boost in standard of living and this cemented the USA as the economic power in the world. Eventually the rest of the world rebuilt and the economic advantages shrunk. We became addicted to this elevated standard of living and bowed to the economic gods instead of returning to our cultural gods that built a civilization so able to thrive.

Capitalism has settled in a predictable, pleasant rhythm of oligopolies. You get 2 or 4 or 8 companies and settle them down to a century or three of unified efforts in dividing the market between them. Why do you fellows waste so much of your (and our) time with all this in-fighting? To the rest of us reading these posts, it is quite boring and bothersome. If someone disagrees with you, or says something you don’t like about you, just do like I an many others do – ignore it. Instead, we readers have to be punished with seemingly endless (“Yuse wanna fight, bitch!”) tit-for-tat battle posts. Well-reasoned challenges to/arguments against what someone says is one thing (and perfectly acceptable, as it adds to the debate), but these constant personal attacks against each other (and not only by you two, for sure) is downright ridiculous. What it sounds like you want, for an “honorable site”, is a heavily moderated forum with account registrations and some form of reputation. Those exist.
I actually prefer that type of environment—usually. (Most particularly, I would prefer that type of society in real life, offline!) You will note that I disagree civilly where disagreement is civil, and not outside the pale of an honorable society. That includes hereby—in how you addressed me, and in how I here reply.
But on a site which aptly describes its comments section up-top as a “lunchroom food fight”, two things will occur:
(1) Cranks, trolls, and sockpuppeteers will freely harass any man whom they sufficiently dislike. It is the usual course of breakdown in any society wherein politeness is not respected, and bad behavior is not autħoritatively policed: The lowest elements will get the upper hand if they are not smacked down. Those with a schoolyard-bully mentality take encouragement from passivity. Can you tell a man not to hit back in such a situation? I sometimes get gutter insults attached to nearly every substantive comment I make on a page! Should I just “ignore it”?
(2) Expanding on (1), troll control is a subtle art that is necessary to any forum where trolls are not simply banned. For obvious reasons, I will not say too much about this—save to point out that, if you were to spend a fantastic amount of time examining things that you probably ignore, you would notice that, after I have only been here for less than two months, some of the longtime trolls here are afraid of me.
(3) There will be present some grossly unacceptable characters. There are several regulars here who would be banned on any actively moderated forum in which I would ever partake. As for myself, those are the only ones you ever see me actively pursue with personal attacks—and I do that on principle. Society has collapsed because men don’t draw a line at certain principles. If every man drew a line on no-compromise principles, instead of saying, “yeah, man, whatever”, then we would not now be sitting amidst the ruins of what was Western civilization! I actively criticize men who fail to stand up on these points. I did so above, on this very page: Where are you as to “Doug’s” racial-egalitarian propaganda?
And yes, it does matter who started it and who is right. That is a matter of principle. I will not suffer moral equivocation, much less false equivalencies. Your statement about “you fellows” is wrong.
I do ignore many, if not most of the personal attacks on me here, simply because they are not worth my time. For example, last month, I ignored “Doug” for a few weeks while he went around backtalking me and calling me a “loon”. He started that immediately after he had launched a bizarre, unprovoked attack on me that seemed to come out of nowhere; thereto, I had been nothing but friendly toward him. If you suggest that I do something wrong for sticking a shiv in him when I see fit to do so, then you are telling me that I should be a passive, defenseless bitch. Taken under advisement.

— Thoughtful discussion is sometimes almost impossible here. On this very page, I now have “awaiting” m0d attention two long, informative comments on different subjects. Both required substantial time and effort to prepare, including the reduction of concise excerpts I thereby quoted from sources I thereby cited for further reading. On this same page, all of my “personal attacks” went right through. Now, at this particular moment, I find myself a bit unmotivated to do anything but rip a few jerks to pieces.
A site that wishes to have quality discussion should first and foremost encourage quality discussion. (!)
