CH, I think the geographic bifurcation of Civil War I makes it a more difficult comparison. The tariff fight meant some legit zero sum economic warfare back then. We do have a real urban vs rural divide, but being the world’s reserve currency cushions the blow for economic “losers”. Other than, I don’t really know, would welcome a civil war buff to chime in here.

I think all wars are banker’s wars to some extent but from what I recall, both capitalists and skilled labor benefitted from tariffs and supported, if not war, policies that raised tensions. Skilled laborers probably had skin in the game (my blacksmith 4th great grandfather sent two sons to war). Probably a broader coalition than most wars since. I think most northern opposition was from the poorest and pro-peace idealists.

Most thinking people saw civil war coming a good 15 years in advance. Lots of hubris on both sides about how easy victory would come. John Browns rebellion was in 1859 and the Nat Turner Rebellion was about 15 years sooner. A good snap shot without going to the library is to watch Gone With the Wind. It is a very accurate novel and the film is pretty faithful to the novel. It is a great film in the mold of Dr, Zhivago, only 30 years older.

Robert Prechter, Jr. originated a theory called Socionomics (see socionomics.net for more) that holds that because humans are social creatures who display very obvious herding tendencies, groups of humans display an unconscious “social mood” almost the way women who live together will eventually synchronize their menstrual periods.
This social mood rises and falls in a fractal pattern, and when it’s high and rising for a long time it’s characterized by openness and trust that (in recent times) can become completely pathological. We have experienced a “rally” in social mood that is longer and higher than any prior example. We’re in nose-bleed territory, hence the embrace of Leftist Lunacy everywhere.
When it declines far enough, and for long enough, people are beset by distrust and fear. The hypothesis holds that major stock market averages are one (among many) barometers of social mood. This is why a graph of stock market activity aligns almost perfectly with wars…but wars don’t cause stocks to fall, it is falling stocks (and the decline in social mood they measure) that eventually sets off wars. The wars almost always begin near or slightly AFTER the bottom of a large bear market. This explains why some people erroneously think that war is bullish for stocks, they’re reversing the causality.
According to this theory, we CAN’T have a major war until stocks have collapsed. And a further refinement of the theory is that bear markets are generally a sideways affair, a decline followed by a rally (not to new highs) and then a final (2nd) decline to the ultimate low. It is the SECOND decline that sets off the massive war. We have yet to experience our “1st” declining wave (which in theory should be mostly a collapse in financial values), and we should be decades from the second wave down, which should bottom near the beginning of a war even larger than World War Two. My guess is that it will be the civil war that breaks the USA into pieces.

Stocks topped September 2018 (the typical two year delay after the bond market’s top in Aug 2016 after its 35 year bull run.)
First will be a retracement of the entire last nine years of rally. Astonishing as it sounds, that’s about an 80% decline, so huge was the 9 year final run in the Greatest Bull Market of All Time (1982 to 2018.)
All market bottoms MUST be characterized by capitulation; anyone who can be induced to sell must have capitulated. But here’s the rub: The last two times stocks declined hard (50% or more), what was the right thing to do? BUY!! Back up the truck, take a second mortgage on the house and BUY!!!!!
So as stocks decline, people have been taught by recent experience to NEVER sell. The lower stocks get, the more people will step up to buy. Huge bear market rallies will fuel this too. Stocks can decline to the 2009 lows (down 80% or so), then they can go up 100 or 200%, so that “investors” reassure themselves that holding tight is the right course. Then another 80% decline can ensue. 80% down, 200% up, 80% down, 200% up over and over again…it SOUNDS like a great way to make money…except that leads to the 95-98% collapse in stocks required to remove all the credit bubble of the last 40 years. Only when people are completely bombed out will they capitulate, and then it’s too late.
Do I guarantee this? No. I’ve been expecting it for quite some time. Can stocks simply resume climbing? Nothing is impossible. But should a financial cataclysm of this nature occur, it will have social consequences. My guess is that there’s a small shit-hits-fan in a couple years near the bottom (if a major bear market occurs.) A rally of considerable duration might follow, and then ANOTHER massive market decline. It will be at the end of that decline that Civil War Two (actually a resumption of the English Civil War) will kick off.
That forecast and $1 buys a cup of coffee at McD’s.

in civil war 1 the divide was much more geographically pronounced, and the urban and rural parts of the state were still the same culture. for example, Dallas in those days would have much more in common with a small town in Texas than they would with New York City, and the small town in upstate NY would have more in common with Manhattan than with small town Texas.
It’s the opposite way now. People in large cities like Dallas or Atlanta have more in common with San Fransiscans and New Yorkers than they do even with towns barely an hour’s drive from the city.

If you view what is occurring now through an historical lens, you will know that these displays are actually pretty tame by historical standards of political violence. The left seems to be relying on going after the family members of guys like Tucker and Coulter to implore them to tone it down so that the left can better shape the minds of people. Tucker has a very tangible effect on public opinion. Tucker can’t be intimidated but his wife and kids can be.
If the left begins to see these non-physically violent tactics fail, they will amp up.
I agree that these are the “first volleys” and will eventually evolve into more violent displays of power when these people become fully aware that they have a complicit law enforcement, media, and big tech communications infrastructure to have their backs.

Ah but there is one crucial difference between left and right at the end of the day…lack of restraint means the left rots from the inside out, checking off vice after vice.
