I think it’s the other way around. Knit fabrics enabled fatness, at least in part. Before the 1960s of so, most clothing people wore was made of woven (non-stretch) material, which had to be at least semi-fitted. Women would tailor even store-bought clothing to fit properly.
Knits allowed a lot of laziness in clothing design, as proper fit was no longer required. Since knits will form to any body shape, there was no need to stay trim in order for your clothing to fit. We all collectively lost that incentive.
I could go on about it, but that’s probably already too much estrogen. The worst thing we did for women’s fashion was get rid of the corset, imo.
