Movies used to be this good. From The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964):

Are we more free now under our groaning Diversitopia than we were in 1964 when the US was 90% White? This scene wouldn’t make it past the cutting room floor today. There’s your answer.

Watching stuff that can’t be made today is great. We will get to imagine being in a world prior to the stifling PC speech codes. The battle scene in Zulu is a great one, as is Live and Let Die where James Bond single handedly offs all the evil voodoo practicing Jamaicans to rescue the white girl they wanted to sacrifice.

    • Agreed. The thing about movies is, there’s a lot of money to made from them — if you do them right. Current movies are actually anti-feminist, with typically 1 token female in a cast of 4. If you cut out that X-traneous female, then you can deploy more action, more suspense … more real humanity (males being more real than femmes).

Just a figure for you: Avatar and Titanic, both by Canuck James Cameron, each made $1 billion plus. You can buy a few huge buildings for that sum. Used, of course. Used.

If they let that scene into a movie about Rome today, they’d have to change the ending from the fall of Rome to an ending where those “barbarians” prove the “racist” senator wrong and end up building a spacecraft and calculating the trajectories that put the first Roman on the moon.

Yep! Vandals, Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Angles, Saxons, Jutes – all Germans, just like their descendants Werner von Braun and his team. The Soviets had their own team of (captured) German barbarian rocket scientists. Some barbarians contain great potential that merely needs the right conditions to explode into creative productivity while other barbarians – well, um, not so much…

Yes — we should be so lucky as to have high-IQ northern European barbarians pouring in on us in millions. The situation we’re facing would have been actually inconceivable to the Romans, no doubt.

      • The Romans, during the states of entropy “achieved” by the later Roman Emperors, actually did allow some settlement within Imperial Borders of certain tribes who agreed to abide by the rules.

Even during Rome’s heyday, they were giving citizenship out to tribesmen who learned the lingua franca and didn’t trouble Roman veterans settling down in their territories. Pussy would marry gladiusbearers and you’d have a mixed Celt/Latin culture, and so on, until today we have “French” (Bastardized Latin), “Spanish” (more Latin patois), etc.

Sweet Mercy, we new then what was about to happen. This was 1964, one year before the Immigration Reform Act of 1965. I haven’t watched this movie, but I’m willing to bet that it was made with the intention of delivering a political message and a warning.

Clearly, the message was lost, or fell on deaf ears.

The message was coming from the movie’s antagonist, not the star protagonists, don’t forget.

(((They))) were already painting it as the “opinion of the bad guys”.

I remember these movies from that time, including this one – I was 8 years old in 1964 and I loved those epic movies about ancient Rome! Even back then at that tender young age I instinctively identified with the bad guys in these films while finding the good guys uninteresting – now I understand why.

Honestly; the Glen Ross speech is a good one either way.

Sure you need to motivate yourself to do your job because that’s why they hired you but you also need to factor in your own goals and drives.

It was being done sarcastically but it’s legitimate advice, if your a family man and the job isn’t allowing you to do that. Quit it and get another job. If it isn’t serving your needs or drives, find one that is.

Otherwise by keeping a job that doesn’t do what you need and not doing it all that great, your just doing a disservice to both yourself and your employers at that point.

OT–I’m of Vandal descent, but I promise to behave. That said, I try to come up with a new term for lefties. Basically, they’re campus trash that majored in shit studies and seek rents accordingly, that needs to be exposed to fight effectively. Shitlib is nice but a bit harsh and vulgar, also, it’s just an insult, so it’s not fitting for any situation. How about “rent-seekers,” “corrupt left,” “regressive left,” “precarious progressives”? Steve S. proposed Ctrl-left once, but that’s more of an in-joke, Joe Blow might not get it, also, that centres on their authoritarian streak, while exposing structural corruption should be better to shame them publicly. We should try hard to come up with something catchy, short, and aggressive. They call us racists or bigots, that’s pretty good tactically, everybody gets what that’s supposed to mean.

  12. HIstory changes through the varied lenses of culture. For instance, when you look at the Roman Empire, which was celebrated in the Medieval and Renaissance periods of history, slavery seemed to be stamped APPROVED Europewide. But 21st century movies — movies being the strongest form of culture — skirts the issue of slavery (black, or otherwise). The movie Gladiator with Russell Crowe, which ZzI actually liked, was mum on the question of slavery. You don’t see slaves milling about, and the gladiators themselves are distorted as if they were forced to fight. In actual history, the gladiators were normally treated well (hard to replace a good one) and were not cheaply disposed pieces of meat.

Another thing about movies that interest Zzme is how much stronger they are than books or paintings at forcing new concentric circles to flow through the minds of society. A movie can break resistance. Even Television cannot easily do that except through repeated small-box repetition. ONE MOVIE — such as the Terminator franchise — can bring to the fore a whole issue … in this case, machine rebellions in the near-future. Everyone knows it because Jim (remember Zzme mentioning him?) Cameron brought it up.

Movies are fascinating. I’m gonna love makin’ em.

Gladiator was very explicit about the men being slaves, bought and paid for, and the idea that they could “win their freedom” under extraordinary circumstances was hit upon several times.

And if you think the Terminator franchise was what brought machine rebellion into the public’s consciousness, you betraying the greenhorn solipsism of your generation, and certainly of your (ahem) ghey inclinations.

It’s a sort of shadow empire, because Americans have always had an understandable aversion to open colonialism, even if our “leaders” always get a tingle in their tinkles from pushing around the world’s small fry, so they’ve settled on economically and militarily subservient “client states” instead.

Of course, such an “empire” mostly benefits on the ruling class, probably even more than old-fashioned colonialism, which explicitly refused to import cheap labor; they just exploited in foreign lands.
