If you’re looking for something family friendly, pick anything rural on a 100-mile wide line between Beaumont and Texarkana. Houston is hot. I spent junior high and high school there. I’ve not been back in more than ten years, and my family lives thereabouts. Dallas is a metropolitan mess. San Antonio isn’t American, it’s Tex-Mex. The Panhandle was made by God to test the worthy. West Texas is where Supreme Court justices go to die.
If you want to escape dindus you’ll have to go to the Arkansas Ozarks, where black people generally don’t stop for gas.

The secret to understanding Austin is that it is in a part of the state that never was Anglo Saxon Puritain. The whole area was settled by idealistic Germans and Czechs. Municipal pools have always allowed female topless sunbathing. People think that had something to do with the hippie times, but it goes back to Germany.
And there is something else, that cannot be over-stressed: The scenery West of town and towards Lake Travis is drop dead gorgeous. In the spring time, with the wild flowers, it is deliriously, heart-achingly gorgeous.
