Best why? I don’t really know how I feel about the prospect of having children. Though it would allow the genetic continuation of my line, it would do nothing to continue my own existence after my dead, and my own existence is the only one I can consciously experience. 1. Perhaps I would feel deeply fulfilled, as though I had touched my innate purpose in life. I would feel in harmony with my instincts as a mother.

3. Perhaps I would outright resent the amount of attention and resources they needed

I am not alone in my ambivalence towards having children. This is a pattern seen across the intelligent and creative. The problem is that the more positive attributes you possess in the modern world- the more intelligence, charm, creativity etc. that you have, the more you will be rewarded if you focus your energy on yourself or your ideals. Maybe you will gain success or maybe you will gain a life filled with fun, but the energy you spend on yourself is maximized when your attributes are most desired in society. Hence, the most desirable among us have the greatest incentive to focus on ourselves and not our children.
If you are a man, a child means a wife (or it should), and a wife means an aging partner who will own half your assets though she probably won’t have earned half of it. If you are a woman, you will probably be the primary parent to a child, who will take the bulk of your time and energy. The woman is the one doing most of the menial caretaking of the child (generally, that’s not something we mind).
As for me, from my childless vantage point, I wouldn’t need my kids to be successful or smart or anything to be worth it. I would just need them to provide a pleasant interaction. No “mom, I hate you! you never let me do anything!” all the time.
I like to go hiking. When I go, I often see families with 3 and 4 yr old children who can only go a few hundred yards out before having to head back being that kids can’t make it that far. I get to the top of the mountain, and it’s beautiful and then I feel bad for those parents with their strollers and all their crap on their backs.
For me to have kids, I just need to believe that holding your kid’s hand was better than seeing the view from the top of the mountain. I just need to believe that interacting with them is better than whatever I was going to do for myself without them.
