None of them are probably right in the head. They’re probably all insane/abnormal within the parameters of their kind. In this case, it happened to manifest in a female driven to dementedly killing another lion, and a male who dementedly failed to resist being killed by a smaller, weaker animal.
It has nothing to do with him being a “beta” and everything to do with animals forced into unnatural situations acting in unnatural, destructive/self-destructive ways. They’re all, by definition, sick and abnormal because they’re in a situation that they are not built to endure.
