Well, most of what we know about the civil war is bogus.
Mainly, it was – like most wars – about money. At the beginning of the CV, the federal government had made no attempt to forbid slavery in the South. (Maybe they “should” have, but that is beside the point.)
The South was essentially agrarian (like most places on Earth at the time).
The North was starting to industrialize. But they could, at the time, not compete with the UK. So they needed heavy tariffs. Additionally,those tariffs was one of the major sources of income for the feds. (The other source was whiskey tax.)
So, to the South, being part of the Union made no economic sense.
From the North’s (i.e. the federals’) point of view, an additional problem with the South’s separation was that it would create a long and practically not defendable border, and goods could have flowed from Europe to ports in the South and then not to just the South but to the North as well.
Now, after a few years, most people in the North were war-weary and saw little point in continuing the war. The already deepening state (i.e. federation, and its hangers-on) saw things differently, of course. So they created the bogeyman of slavery, which was good propaganda. (The fact that slavery was – even according to many at the time – odious, to put it politely, is true but beside the point.) And Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel was printed in large numbers. And this was used to engage the Northern population. It worked.
As to REL, remember it is possible to respect and even admire an enemy (particularly easy when you have won, remember “In Victory Magnanimity”).

The export duty on cotton from the South was the biggest source of funding for the Union. Being part of the Union was an economic drain on the South. Southerners are/were naturally more independent minded and self sufficient than Yankees by temperament as well. Rural Yankees had more in common with the Rebels than the people pushing for the war in New York, Philadelphia and Boston. The Union’s duties also made alternative cotton sources in Egypt and India more viable which were being developed by the 1860s, creating an incentive for the South to rebel. Most of the cotton was shipped to mills in Britain. There was also the Rothschild angle to break up the Union and weaken it forcing the North to join with Canada and then allow for the South to be absorbed later and bring them back under British rule. That was another piece of the plan you never hear about today. Abolitionists were funded by (((British))) interests to this end for that very reason.
