Went to the gas station to grab a protein bar and some coffee before going into work this morning. Clerk appeared to be a guy, about 45 years old. As he fumbled with the scanner, ringing up duplicates and then struggled to void on the register, I am ashamed to think I had one of those moments where you think “So this is why…”. As he finally got everything fixed up he awkwardly laughed and said, “You would figure after writing code and working in IT for almost 20 years I would be able to work this thing.” Dude, had probably been laid off after his job was outsourced, and was doing the first readily available job he could find. I guess the moral here is be a little bit slower to judge…you never know what someone’s lot in life has been.
