Robert Cialdini is an expert in psychological manipulation, i.e., goal-oriented communication. (Something we all do, more or less successfully, whether we are aware of our own machinations or not.) He wrote the seminal book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion. What you may not know is that Cialdini was, in many respects, a founding father of Game. He is cited by many well-regarded pickup artists, and his ideas, like “social proof”, percolate throughout the game literature. Game has had, from its inception. some pretty solid scientific, theoretical, and experiential backing.

Something else you probably don’t know: Cialdini was tapped, along with other renowned behavioral scientists, by the 2008 Obama campaign to help propel Obama to the highest office in the land.

Two weeks before Election Day, Barack Obama’s campaign was mobilizing millions of supporters; it was a bit late to start rewriting get-out-the-vote (GOTV) scripts. “BUT, BUT, BUT,” deputy field director Mike Moffo wrote to Obama’s GOTV operatives nationwide, “What if I told you a world-famous team of genius scientists, psychologists and economists wrote down the best techniques for GOTV scripting?!?! Would you be interested in at least taking a look? Of course you would!!”

Moffo then passed along guidelines and a sample script from the Consortium of Behavioral Scientists, a secret advisory group of 29 of the nation’s leading behaviorists. The key guideline was a simple message: “A Record Turnout Is Expected.” That’s because studies by psychologist Robert Cialdini and other group members had found that the most powerful motivator for hotel guests to reuse towels, national-park visitors to stay on marked trails and citizens to vote is the suggestion that everyone is doing it. “People want to do what they think others will do,” says Cialdini, author of the best seller Influence. “The Obama campaign really got that.”

The existence of this behavioral dream team — which also included best-selling authors Dan Ariely of MIT (Predictably Irrational) and Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein of the University of Chicago (Nudge) as well as Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman of Princeton — has never been publicly disclosed, even though its members gave Obama white papers on messaging, fundraising and rumor control as well as voter mobilization. All their proposals — among them the famous online fundraising lotteries that gave small donors a chance to win face time with Obama — came with footnotes to peer-reviewed academic research. “It was amazing to have these bullet points telling us what to do and the science behind it,” Moffo tells TIME. “These guys really know what makes people tick.”

Cialdini’s theories about the nature of human psychology and his influence on the American elite are evidence of the triumph of Game. Game has infused every facet of the body politic, not just the sexual organs. As CH has said many times already, if you can game a woman into bed you can game a boss into handing you a raise or a nation’s voters into electing you President.

That is the awesomely dark power of Game. And dark it is, because what is essentially remote control of another person’s executive brain function is the kind of power that irresistibly pulls one to malevolent ends.

President Obama is still relying on behavioral science. But now his Administration is using it to try to transform the country. Because when you know what makes people tick, it’s a lot easier to help them change.

You can thank Game for our first two-term halfling SWPL President and the nationalization of 1/7th of the economy. Now, if Game can do that, imagine what it can do on bored girls at bars yearning for a little excitement in their lives.

Some have said the 21st Century will be the age of biology. I think what we are entering is the age of Orwellian mastery over human psychology. Scarily, the two might be related. The power to shape people’s opinions and emotions through mere word and expression, and guide them to actions they may not have taken otherwise, is reaching an apotheosis that could be magnified a thousandfold coupled with the power to alter people’s genetic architecture.

If your eyes are open, you don’t have to look far to see foreboding signs of this new age of the human aquarium rising into view. Unaccountable secret government agencies using the internet to “manipulate, deceive and destroy reputations”. Your webcam commandeered by shadowy operatives. Cameras on every street corner. Cathedralsourced slanderswarms of crimethinkers.

Cialdini’s name has been found in NSA documents. I wouldn’t be surprised if the man himself is working for them.

Doubters can snark about “PUAs” to their hearts’ content, but the arc of recent history is proving that PUAs were at the leading edge all along. Will people listen only when it’s too late?

  3. This explains why just being honest about the number of women you nailed helps you nail the next one. EVEN BETTER is if she sees you interacting with a past nailee.

      Everbody’s doing… me.

    • Spot on.

I went out with a girl recently. Before the date, though, she asked how many people I had slept with. I didn’t reply to the text. Then she adds in a second text, “anything more than 11 is just too many for a guy. I couldn’t handle it.”

      My reply?

      “more”

She came over the next day, and apparently got into it with one of the other girls I’m seeing when she found out about her.

      • Arbiter says:

        Eleven, yeesh.

Eleven over how long a time period? And suppose a guy has already slept with eleven – does that mean he is better for going years without having sex, so that the number is kept low? This is stupid reasoning.

Now, a certain number for someone who is very young, that is another matter. And a much lower number for women than for men.

        • Arbiter, “eleven” is just a shit test, and Reservoir Tip swatted it down.

          • Zombie Shane says:

It’s a shit test right up until:

            #12 gives you Herpes

            #13 gives you Venereal Warts

            #14 gives you Hepatitis

            #15 gives you antibiotic-resistant Gonorrhea

            etc etc etc

There comes a point when folks can have WAY TOO MANY notches on the ol’ bed post.

          • Carlos Danger says:

I have well over 50 and never caught any of that stuff.

          • I’m 54, just bedded Miss# 27 two weeks ago and have never caught any of that…well…let me correct that, back in the 1980s I did get gonorrhea once but when I tell how it happened no one believes me.

All that happened was kissing and then she gave me a blow job in my car, that is it , absolutely nothing else happened and I had not been with a woman in months, so it had to be from her, the next day it felt like fire when I pissed.

The doctor gave me antibiotics and told me it was gonorrhea.( he did not do any test)

all but 3 of the women I slept with were long term relationships, I never was one for one night stands.

Miss #27 two weeks ago is/was long term material but she demanded I do her dishes after less than 2 weeks of dating, I said no, she told me that I had to get out of her house, I did.

I was going to give her the silent treatment but something happened, I had in my possession her hair clipper ( she had asked me to fix it, I can fix almost anything ) and since I was not answering her calls, after a few days she came knocking at my door but I did not answer.

but then she got mad and took my electric snow blower and put it in her car! so I then opened the door and told her calmly but with a firm tone; ” give me my stuff I will give you yours” but at this point she was seeing red, so she yelled stupid stuff at me and said she would sell my stuff.

She was out of control while I was very calm, and this seemed to piss her off more, she even threatened to call the police on me ( which does not make any sense at all )

so I figured I’d teach her a lesson, I called the police and told them she stole my stuff.

Have not heard of her since.

That’ll teach her to make a man leave her place simply because he will not do her dishes

20-30 years ago I would have done her dishes, I’m not that man anymore.

McCain won the college edumakated White vote by 1% in 2008.

Romney improved upon that and won the college edumakated White vote by 18% in 2012.

So, increasingly, smart white folk just aren’t having any of this nonsense.

The problem is that, since 1965, The Frankfurt School has flooded this nation with so many of “The Other” that they almost don’t even need the White vote to win anymore.

Whites are about the only folk in all of recorded history who were ever able to see through this horseshit.

Everyone else – Asians, Negroes, Mexicans – are like silly putty in the hands of The Frankfurt School.

Ergo the need to continue to demonize the White Man at every possible opportunity.

  8. Nothing new.

Psychology has been the name of the game in our society for atleast a half century now. Business. Government. They’re all using it.

    And it works.

One doesn’t need to look too far into it to gain value. Even knowing something as simple as Myers-Briggs gives you a leg up.

    • Arbiter says:

What’s your Myers-Briggs type? It would be interesting to see the distribution of personality types among CH readers. Probably many INTJ or other xNTx types.

I am INTJ myself, the most analytical type. It is rare in society, only three percent as I recall, but as a study showed, far more common among libertarians – i.e.among right-wing people who turn against the establishment, probably not just the ones calling themselves libertarians.

      • Lumpy says:

The only axis that matters in this case, and most others, is T/S. All other axes have virtues and vices balanced on each side, but S is all bad. It should stand for Stubbornly Stupid, not Sensing.

Although there is a case to be made that the MBTI term “Sensing” is equivalent to “Making shit up to feel better about yourself”, which would obviate the need for my redefinition.

        • Matthew says:

          Erratum: it’s the N/S axis I meant.

“Although there is a case to be made that the MBTI term “Sensing” is equivalent to “Making shit up to feel better about yourself”, which would obviate the need for my redefinition.”

I don’t think you know what this means. Intuition is far more likely to lead to wacko theories like Marxism.

The T vs F is the more important axis.

          • Matthew says:

All the other axes are false dichotomies. You can be strong on both ends.

I score nearly 0 for the T/F axis, which I take to mean a balance between Thinking and Feeling. On the E/I axis, it depends how much I’ve been drinking lately, or programming, or both. Rarely do I lean far to one side. For P/J, I always lean P, but it’s because I’m a dithering and feckless wish-washy namby, not because I don’t judge harshly.

  9. Good post

Human beings – the great masses of them – are sheep. They are much more malleable than anyone wants to admit.

We are not independent rational thinkers – on the whole. The masses respond best to those who – as that reprehensible human Hitler wrote – ” treat them like a woman.” They want to be led, they want to be fucked by those who are stronger.

Nietszche – ‘When you meet a woman, get the whip!’ This is what they respond to

Everyone should take a look at Roy Baumeister, another psychologist on par with Cialdini. He is a clear- eyed realist, but savvy enough to couch his dangerous views in PC enough
    language.

Baumeister says some interesting things on “brainwashing”. Namely, it does work, and is being used as we speak on a widespread scale

    • Arbiter says:

At least you didn’t repeat that other propaganda line, that Hitler (sometimes changed to Goebbels in the story) was supposed to advocate the Big Lie Technique. When in fact, what he really writes in My Struggle is a warning against the Big Lie Technique, giving as an example how the socialist media attacked a conservative colonel, claiming that he caused defeats in WWI when the opposite was true, in order to neutralize him as a political threat. To lie and say that Hitler wrote a promotion of the Big Lie Technique when the opposite is true, is of course another example of the Big Lie being used. (The technique is: People think “no smoke without a fire” about big accusations, because they can’t imagine that someone would lie so completely. Only a psychopathic race controlling the media will do that. Another example is when nationalists are attacked by communists, and the media write about it as if the nationalists, called “racists”, had attacked innocent “critics”, never mentioning the communist groups.) People too dumb and selfish to read up on these things – like you – will believe anything the media owners write about Hitler, and never check up on it yourselves. Bleating little sheep indeed.

What is keeping the conservatives from employing these same tactics? A balance will be struck, through violent upheaval or reasonable capitulation. Meantime, game on, fellow game enthusiasts. And game your women away from feminism and the left.

    • Arbiter says:

To some degree you see it in conservative publications. Neocon rags are full of them, since they are of the same cloth as the Marxists. But overall the Right prefers a message based more on factual truth. The Right has the facts on its side, the Left has slurs and manipulative language to silence the facts. The Right honors factual truth because the Right is all about building, and you can’t close your eyes to reality when you want to explain how to build. The Left uses lies and manipulation because their ideology is focused on taking, and so what they need is short-term control of other people – firing up the masses and silencing the opponents. Since they don’t have to worry about building they don’t have to worry about getting economic facts right, or facts about social issues.

Though interestingly, as soon as communists are in power and don’t have to fire up mobs in order to take anymore, they always resort to conservative social policies. Because once firmly in power there is nothing more to take from others, and then they have to focus on building for the first time. That’s when you need to bring out the truth, such as that feminist ideas, drug use and homosexuality hurt society. The fact that all communists states turned socially conservative – heck, Ernesto “Che” Guevara even rounded up homosexuals to put them in labor camps where they could be forced to grow up – is a great indictment against the Left. One which they make sure to keep out of documentaries and school textbooks.

Obama has brilliantly gamed the press. He shows up late all the time, taps their phones, has people call and hassle the hell out of them if they don’t like a single line in a story. A subtext throughout the entire 2008 campaign was how the press felt slighted by and unappreciated by him.

And they’ll do whatever they can in their power to cover up every transgression and spin every story exactly the way he wants it spun.

          This shit works.

          • Skunk says:

He can only get away with it because the press wants him to. Gaming a willing party hardly takes brilliance.

      • The Burninator says:

Not an excuse. They own the old media, but we dominate the new media (Internet).

    • Pijama Wearing Ninja says:

It’s mostly because you can only brainwash people who are susceptible to your message. You can’t brainwash devout Muslims to eat bacon off the bodies of Norwegian sluts as a holy pilgrimage instead of going to Mecca. The problem is that most of the Western world, or at least most of Europe, is fairly idyllic. We all mock Sweden, but most of it is an idyllic crime free place where you feel safe wandering about at night without even second thoughts.

Unless you grew up in a crap area, you were raped/beaten up by immigrants or you like thinking about things, you will not be susceptible to a right wing message outside the paradigm. Most people simply don’t feel the pain yet. The reason why conservatives prefer logic and facts is because the people who like thinking about things are the majority of people who are right wingers outside the paradigm as of yet. More and more people will feel the pain and you will start seeing emotional appeals.

  11. The ruling politicians are masters of game, but game addressed to crowds is radically different than individuals because crowd psychology is radically different than individual psychology. The bible on crowd psychology was written by Gustav Le Bon in 1895: The Crowd. By their own accounts it was on Theodore Roosevelt’s bedside table, and dogeared by Mussolini. Lenin and Stalin took from it, and “Hitler’s indebtedness to Le Bon bordered on plagiarism” in the words of historian and Hitler-biographer Robert G. L. Waite. Sigmund Freud wrote a book discussing Le Bon, which we will quote from below, and Edward Bernays, the father of modern public relations, acknowledged his deep debt, as Goebbels did of Bernays’ reflected insights.

I’ve recently written a blog post describing how crowd think distorts modern science, never mind politics.
    http://whyarethingsthisway.com/2014/03/22/why-are-the-pediatricians-so-confused-about-the-actual-state-of-the-scientific-literature/

    • Arbiter says:

Exactly how would a journalist know that all those leaders read the same book? What facts are presented for that? That’s what I thought. You have to think of what facts are offered for a claim in the media at all times.

      • Arbiter, I’ve seen discussion by serious profs re Roosevelt and Mussolini, and specific mentions of Stalin and Lenin. If you google you can find links. Hitler I’m quoting a particular book by an eminent Hitler-historian, plus its obvious if you read both Mein Kampf and Le Bon. Freud, you can look up the book, its free on kindle. Bernays, there’s video of him talking about it or see his book Propaganda. Likewise Goebbels, Bernays talks about it.

I think the danger is rather in underestimating the number of public leaders (both in front of the camera and behind it) who read it. I don’t know how anyone would or could aspire to lead the world and not read it. And I believe the publication in 1895 of The Crowd is what led to the demise of constitutional government in the US as elites who read it learned better how to exploit the masses.

Instead, the modern technique would be to allow the statistics to determine their own classification by type.

To let the data speak for itself.

    • Matthew says:

It’s one of many personality classification systems. As such, it can be useful as one of many tools in trying to understand humans. Not really debunkable.

  14. And then, of course, there were the millions of phony ACORN votes that actually gave Obama the victory…

    • Yeah and some district got 100% of the votes for Obama, which is highly suspicious and as far as I know never happened before.

Yet the media swept that under the carpet…

Without the media – its accomplice – the left would not be so successful.

Hey all: im looking for day game openers to use on the train/bus, or at stations ect. Im thinking imdirect is obviously best here? Alro how do you deal with the presure of possibly every one watching you?

    • yeahokcool says:

      1. smile and say “hello.”
      2. assume that everyone is watching you and learn to relish the opportunity to showcase your superiority and desirability to the masses.

A good one if she is listening to her iPhone/iPod say “I bet you have (insert horrible band) on there” or something similar

Robert is or at least was extremely beta..he started his search because he was so bad at saying “no” to people.

  17. This is why our Republic was doomed once they started letting women and young people vote. Older men have a higher likelihood of seeing through BS.

For women, the electoral fever of voting for Obama was pure tingles.

    • The problem is that older men in power also have a higher likelihood of perpetrating the BS. Were you alive during the runup to the war in Iraq? Did you not see the silver-back grandpa gorillas in the White House lying their asses off to the global public to achieve their nefarious ends?

      • whorefinder says:

lmao. Oh, such a maroon. And a liar. typical left-wing b.s.-er.

        Rape!

      • If only older men were voting before 9/11, there would have been armed people on the plane.

That being said, there would have been no reason to invade Iraq because we would have carpet bombed Baghdad and/or assassinated Hussein after he invaded Kuwait back in the early 90s.

What we did in Iraq and continue to do in Afghanistan isn’t fighting a war. It’s pure profiteering and accomplishing nothing except employing millions of contractors.

I know most of the commenters on here are conservative. However, I recently learned I should thank Obama. As someone who earns his livelihood off of the sale of cheap alcohol, Obama’s low-cost insurance, readily available food stamps, and other hand-out programs are putting extra dollars in the pockets of my customers, which makes it back to me.

  19. It’s criminal that this post didn’t mention Edward Bernays, the father of public relations, and one of the 100 most important Americans of the 20th century.

  20. YaReally says:

nah this can’t be accurate. Everyone knows game only works on drunk slutty bar whores with low self-esteem, AMOGing only works on pussy beta bitches who aren’t big tough MMA fighting badasses who will punch you for talking to their girl, and that if you fake it people will always instantly be able to tell that you’re faking it and will shun hate and probably kill you because everyone can instantly see thru your deception.

People don’t just consistently naturally respond to specific stimuli in predictable ways, CH. Maybe you need to read some Jezebel or listen to the real alpha males here who didn’t need to learn game or listen to the women here who know NAWALT.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to eat McDonalds while I drink a glass of Coke and watch…shit what is it I’m supposed to watch tonight? I’d better google a top 10 list of the most popular tv shows because if a lot of people like something that means I should try to as well. Now don’t waste any more of our time telling us we’ll fall for silly “mind control” tricks…don’t you know I’m a badass alpha male and I’m immune to that? Brrr it’s cold, where’s my Adidas jacket…

  21. “That is the awesomely dark power of Game. And dark it is, because what is essentially remote control of another person’s executive brain function is the kind of power that irresistibly pulls one to malevolent ends.”

“…dark power…malevolent ends”. And you toot this ‘triumph’ out of your horn?

  22. dcllcd says:

    Great article.

    Game is very powerful indeed.

  23. Samson J. says:

President Obama is still relying on behavioral science. But now his Administration is using it to try to transform the country. Because when you know what makes people tick, it’s a lot easier to help them change.

It all makes sense – this is pretty much how the Homintern has been winning so far. But let’s see Rightists take these techniques back.

  24. Don says:

The beginning of the end for all of us will be when they develop an effective lie detector. Also when computer surveillance will be able to analyse people’s body language to gauge on a surface level, what they are thinking about. Of course it will all be about making you safe! Oh gosh golly gee, it will mean we will be able to get the bad guys – think about zero crime and how safe you and your loved ones are gonna be blah blah blah. Unfortunately we will fall for that with bells on, especially as you get older and more vulnerable. Not good times ahead I am afraid – oh well.

  25. SolInvictus says:

“…is the suggestion that everyone is doing it. ”

So it took “top” behavioral scientists to figure out essentially
mob/pack mentality and the power/threat of mob rule.
I thought that was old news in, you know, ancient Greece.
Definitely something the founders wanted no part of, which is why they started a Republic with all kinds of restrictions on voting rights.

Sorry, I know I was supposed to be awestruck by this supposedly stellar accomplishment of Game, but this is the same old playbook Trotsky played from. And as always, no snark or sarcasm intended, leftists/liberals aren’t and never have been difficult to lead by the nose.

  26. Lash says:

Repeating this for emphasis- The “arc of recent history is proving that PUAs were at the leading edge all along. Will people listen only when it’s too late?”

Everything I use in social situations to control/attract women, I use in business for the same reasons. Body language, influence, everything can be used in multiple areas of your life – if you do not use it to benefit you in all things, you still have a lot to learn.

Turn you head Greg, Matt King… all you college pukes…

If the only thing you know about Moby Dick is that the whale was white, here is the rest of the story.

I kinda wanna read the book now.
